President Donald Trump issued a presidential memorandum federalizing 2,000 California National Guard troops and deploying them to Los Angeles—bypassing Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass—as violent anti‑ICE protests spiraled into chaos in Paramount and beyond.

Trump slammed California’s Democrat leadership, labeling Newsom and Bass “incompetent” for failing to restore law and order amid nightly clashes, burning vehicles, and rioters pelting federal agents with rocks and concrete.

Trump also issued a warning that protesters will not be permitted to wear masks.

Trump wrote on Truth Social:

Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest. We have an incompetent Governor (Newscum) and Mayor (Bass) who were, as usual (just look at how they handled the fires, and now their VERY SLOW PERMITTING disaster. Federal permitting is complete!), unable to to handle the task.

These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED. Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why??? Again, thank you to the National Guard for a job well done!

It can be recalled that the woke LAPD previously claimed in a statement that Saturday’s demonstrations “remained peaceful” across the city.

“Today, demonstrations across the City of Los Angeles remained peaceful, and we commend all those who exercised their First Amendment rights responsibly. The Los Angeles Police Department appreciates the cooperation of organizers, participants, and community partners who helped ensure public safety throughout the day.

While today’s events concluded without incident, the Los Angeles Police Department remains fully prepared to respond swiftly and appropriately to any potential acts of civil unrest. Our commitment to safeguarding the rights, safety, and well-being of all Angelenos continues – day and night.

We will maintain a heightened readiness posture and remain ready to ensure the continued safety of our communities.”

Democrat Rep. Dave Min shamelessly echoed the LAPD’s statement and lashed out at Trump for deploying the National Guard.

“As the LAPD is reporting, the protestors in LA are being peaceful. This is not a rebellion or an invasion. There is no legal basis, including under 10 U.S. Code § 12406, for Trump to take over California’s National Guard. Trump is trying to cross the Rubicon and take this country into tyranny.”

The order triggered an immediate standoff. Gov. Newsom fired back, calling the move “purposefully inflammatory” and warning it would only “escalate tensions.”

L.A. Mayor Karen Bass later clarified no Guard troops were yet in the city, praising local law enforcement to allow the riot to continue and warning against the federal overreach.

Below are some of the videos of peaceful protests in Los Angeles:
