Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs swore Friday that her administration will not perform an execution despite the fact that the state Supreme Court arranged it over the objections of the state’s brand-new chief law officer.
The Democratic guv’s pledge not to perform Aaron Gunches on April 6 for his murder conviction in a 2002 killing came a day after the state Supreme Court stated it needs to give an execution warrant if specific appellate procedures have actually concluded– which those requirements were satisfied in Gunches’ case.
Last week, Hobbs selected retired U.S. Magistrate Judge David Duncan to analyze the state’s procurement of deadly injection drugs and other death sentence procedures due to the state’s history of mishandling executions.
