Stick with me here folks. The story I am going to inform you might provide you the goosebumps. It might be too saccharine for others. Regardless, it holds true. My 87 years of age mom passed away today– the exact same day reserved to commemorate the U.S. flag– quietly. She had a long, great life and, like anybody who lives a long period of time, got rid of some difficult difficulties. As a young woman aged 10 to 13, my mother saw her Dad and 2 older siblings pass away from tuberculosis. She was raised by a single mom– a hard, amusing woman who lived to see 101 years.

So what does this involve Flag Day. My mother was a Lyons and her 4th terrific uncle was a fellow called Charles Thomson. Charles came from Ireland and shown up in Delaware in1739 He was just 10 years old. He was accompanied by his dad and 2 older siblings, that included seventeen years of age sibling, William, my mom’s 4th terrific grandpa.

With the coast of Delaware in sight, catastrophe struck the Thomsons. Call it the paradoxical luck of the Irish. Their dear old father– not that old in fact, just 44– passed away. Trigger unidentified. The Thomson young boys showed up in America as orphans and were divided up. William, the older bro, headed for Virginia to pursue his aspiration of owning a farm. He prospered because endeavor and lived to the ripe aging of 93 (he is buried in Augusta, Virginia).

Charles was separated from his siblings and put with the household of a regional blacksmith. And here the story takes a twist that Hollywood may discover implausible.

Charles Thomson: (the Secretary to the Continental Congress) The Man ...

Charles was confessed to Francis Alison’s school in New London, Pennsylvania. Within a couple of years, he ended up being pals with Benjamin Franklin, who became his benefactor. Charles was a ravenous trainee with a pressing thirst to find out. He spoke French and Greek and ended up being a tutor Philadelphia Academy (now referred to as the University of Pennsylvania). https://declaration.fas.harvard.edu/blog/november-thomson

Charles then developed himself as a Philadelphia merchant and intellectual leader with great political connections. His organization interests pulled him into the Revolutionary motion throughout the 1760 s, and by 1774, when John Adams showed up for the First Continental Congress, Thomson was referred to as the Sam Adams of Philadelphia.

He was the very first and just Secretary of the Continental Congress His name is on the very first printing of the Declaration of Independence. The manuscript Journals of the Continental Congress remain in his hand. He developed the last, authorized style for the Great Seal of the United States, still in usage today.

And here is where flag day come into the story:

[The] importance of the colors red, white, and blue is drawn from heraldry and was not initially meant to use to the flag. Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, going over the proposed U.S. seal, offered symbolic significances for the colors in the seal, drawn from heraldry, with white representing pureness and innocence; red, strength and valor; and blue representing alertness, determination, and justice. Gradually, that description happened connected with the flag.

I do not understand if Mom picked to pass away today. She had stated her goodbyes to kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and terrific, fantastic grandchildren. I take motivation from the reality that she passed on the day devoted to commemorating the flag of the United States of America, whose significance was specified by her fantastic uncle. It is essential paradox. A dark day made light when I assess household history. I believe Uncle Charle had it. America ought to represent pureness and innocence; strength and valor; and most significantly of all, determination and justice. I thank the worldwide readers for indulging me on making this point. I still think in what American is expected to be and hope that this Republic discover its method back to its innovative roots. A nation really dedicated to pureness, valor and justice would be a true blessing to the world.

NOTE– Charles Thomson’s vision of pureness had absolutely nothing to do with bigotry. Pureness of idea and action. To put it simply, a country that lives by high morals.
