President Donald Trump announced today that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire,” concluding a period of intense cross-border hostilities that had escalated to the most severe confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in decades.

The ceasefire agreement was reached following overnight negotiations mediated by the United States, with key involvement from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.

President Trump shared the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating:

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The ceasefire agreement was confirmed by both nations.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced that the ceasefire would take effect immediately, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and security.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri detailed that military operations on land, air, and sea would cease from 5: 00 PM Indian Standard Time, following direct communication between the military operations heads of both countries.

The recent escalation was triggered by a terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in 26 civilian deaths. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militants and launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting alleged terrorist camps in Pakistan.

Pakistan responded with “Operation Bunyan Ul Marsoos,” leading to mutual missile and drone strikes and raising fears of a broader conflict.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance played pivotal roles in mediating the ceasefire.

Secretary Rubio wrote on X:

“Over the past 48 hours, VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.

I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.

We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”

However, there are reports that Pakistan violated the ceasefire agreement.

According to Indian defense officials, Pakistan initiated drone incursions into Jammu and Kashmir, targeting areas such as Srinagar, Udhampur, and parts of Rajasthan. Artillery shelling was also reported along the Line of Control (LoC) in sectors including Akhnoor, Rajouri, and RS Pura.
