A loud surge in the Navy Yard area in Southeast Washington, D.C. Sunday night that rattled windows, triggered automobile alarms and was heard and felt almost 2 miles away was apparently blamed by reacting firefighters on a big unlawful firework gadget.

Photos taken at the scene reveal a modest sized crater at the Canal Park ice skating rink with a close-by glass barrier burnt out. No injuries were reported, however nerves were shaken throughout much of the location.
The very first eyewitness report was of vehicle alarms going off and individuals fleing after a surge was heard, “Explosion in navy lawn? … Car alarms going off. Saw a couple of individuals fleing from canal park towards New Jersey Ave”
