Colombian President Gustavo Petro has said Trump is a “fascist” and compared his immigration policy to that of Nazi Germany.
In a television interview this weekend, Petro was asked about his feelings on Trump days after their high profile diplomatic dispute.
Petro explained:
I start from a principle, and this is the discussion with Trump. According to his speeches because I have never personally spoken with him, I know that many economically powerful Colombians who live in the United States have shaped his idea of the communist, the boogeyman, etc. But he has never spoken with me. He doesn’t know what I think. He barely knows what I know.
But Mr. Trump, in his speeches, says I have heard him, that every migrant is a criminal. Right? Yes. He has criminalized an entire population group. That is a fascist concept. Population groups should not be criminalized. I cannot say that every white American is an exploiter because that would be a huge mistake. And even worse, I cannot say that they are all plunderers and commit crimes simply because they are white. No.
Because that same thing, Felix, is what happened in Germany in 1933. They criminalized a population group, a religious group. And it ended in the extermination of six million people.
Today, in the streets of U.S. cities, there are raids. Today, they do not ask if you have papers or not. They take a look at your face. You, Felix, might pass. They attack those who don’t pass. The racial examination of a discriminatory gaze. Yes, it is called racial profiling in the United States.
Well then, let’s say this: that is fascism. It comes from an old racism.
That attitude of criminalizing population groups to win the applause of the majority is exactly the same as what Hitler did to the Jews and to the socialists in order to gain popular applause in 1933.

Petro’s insulting comments come just days after he was forced into a humiliating U-turn by Trump after trying to block the arrival of deportation flights form the U.S. on the grounds that the “dignity” of migrants was being violated.
However, Petro soon folded when Trump threatened to impose tariffs and sanctions on those affiliated with the Colombian government.
He later acknowledged that he had agreed to all of Trump’s terms “without limitation or delay.”
On Friday, Petro went even further by urging all his fellow citizens residing illegally in the U.S. to return home with the promise of loans and job opportunities.
“I ask undocumented Colombians in the US to immediately leave their jobs in that country and return to Colombia as soon as possible,” he wrote on the X platform.
“Wealth is produced only by working people,” he continued. “The Department of Social Prosperity, DPS, will seek to provide productive loans to returnees who enroll in its programs. Let’s build social wealth in Colombia.”
