Dr. Robert Bredt, the medical director for the Texas Medical Board since 2012, has ‘retired’ from his role after his tie to Planned Parenthood was exposed.
A recent legal document exposed that Bredt has been working for Planned Parenthood of South Texas Laboratory since 2011, overseeing the operation and administration of the lab.
This kerfuffle began not with a debate about reproductive health care, but rather, another highly politicized fight about COVID treatments. The Texas Medical Board has been locked in an ongoing legal battle with Dr. Mary Talley Bowden, a Houston ear, nose and throat doctor, about her anti-vaccine stances and use of ivermectin to treat COVID. In 2023, the board filed an official complaint against Bowden, alleging she violated the standard of care, failed to maintain patient-doctor confidentiality and acted unprofessionally by treating a COVID patient without examining them
After she refused to settle, Bowden ended up before an administrative law judge through the State Office of Administrative Hearings. As part of that case, the Texas Medical Board filed a motion asking to introduce Bredt as an expert witness, to testify about the board’s usual practices and procedures. The motion included Bredt’s resumé, which showed his employment at a Planned Parenthood lab.
In December, after the document went public, Texas State Rep. Brian Harrison wrote to Texas Governor Greg Abbott to ask why someone with extensive ties to the abortion funder plays a major role in regulating healthcare in the state.
Texas should be leading the fight against Planned Parenthood – not employing them.

State Rep. Briscoe Cain joined the calls for Bredt’s firing, saying, “Texans expect the Texas Medical Board to uphold the highest standards of ethics and impartiality.”
“The fact an individual responsible for regulating the practice of medicine in Texas also works for Planned Parenthood—a criminal organization that profits from murdering babies—stands in direct conflict with the laws of our nation and our state’s pro-life values. This is unacceptable. He must be fired.”
“I’m calling on the Medical Board to terminate Dr. Robert Bredt’s employment immediately.”

Harrison promised to continue calling on the Texas Medical Board to remove Bredt, suggesting he would draft legislation to defund TMB completely if he was not removed.
NEW: I’ve instructed my staff to call Texas Medical Board every morning until the Planned Parenthood official they put in charge of regulating Texas doctors is no longer employed.
I will tweet about it every day until then.
And I’ve begun drafting legislation to defund TMB… https://t.co/Nq1NyH3SbQ

On Wednesday, Rep. Harrison announced Bredt’s departure after intense public pressure.
“WE WON!”
“My office just confirmed that the Planned Parenthood official who was hired as Medical Director of the Texas Medical Board is no longer in that role.”
“Grateful for everyone who joined the call to end this insanity after we exposed it 10 days ago.”
“There should be an immediate investigation to determine how this happened and accountability for everyone involved.”
