42- year-old Tyler Schmidt, his 42- year-old partner Sarah Schmidt and their 6-year-old child, Lula Schmidt, were fatally shot within their camping tent at the Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground on Friday early morning.
A 9-year-old kid who was camping with the household made it through.
The shooter, 23- year-old Anthony Sherwin of Nebraska, was discovered dead in the woods close by with a self-inflicted gunshot injury.
The intention for the murders is unidentified and it is thought to be a “random act.”

The Iowa Department of Public Safety recognized the victims as Tyler Schmidt, 42; his 42- year-old partner, Sarah Schmidt; and their 6-year-old child, Lula Schmidt, all of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Their bodies were discovered in their camping tent early Friday at the Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground, about 180 miles (290 kilometers) east of Des Moines.
Authorities stated the presumed shooter, 23- year-old Anthony Sherwin, was discovered dead Friday in a woody location of the park with a self-inflicted gunshot injury.
Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Department of Public Safety’s department of criminal examination, informed The Associated Press on Saturday that the intention for the attack was still unidentified.
Cedar Falls Mayor Rob Green, who stated he is a next-door neighbor of the Schmidts, published on Facebook on Friday that the couple’s 9-year-old child, Arlo, “made it through the attack, and is safe.” The post did not state whether Arlo remained in the camping tent and even at the campground when the shootings took place, and the mayor informed the AP he didn’t have those information.
