Reporters who were expected to observe President Biden’s greatly promoted trilateral conference with the leaders of Japan and the Philippines missed his remarks Thursday when press handlers left them standing downstairs in a corridor as the commander-in-chief spoke.
The unusual logistical snafu avoided reporters from seeing the 81- year-old president’s opening remarks to Philippine President Bongbong Marcos and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in the White House East Room.
The day’s print swimming pool press reporter, Michael Shear of the New York Times, communicated the unforeseen issue in an emailed upgrade to associates who were expecting quotes from the top of significant United States allies.
